3 Things San Jose Is Getting More Of…

More

Here at Homes of Silicon Valley, we strive to view the community around us from ‘the glass is half-full’ perspective. So, on that note, we are pleased to share 3 things that the city of San Jose is getting MORE of, based on recent headlines from San Jose Spotlight.

MORE COFFEE

Distance learning, working from home, deciphering election headlines… one of the only ways to get through it all is coffee! And not just any coffee, but coffee purchased from Nirvana Soul – a 10-year dream in the making and now reality for two sisters.

Nate LeBlanc, Business Development Manager for the San Jose Downtown Association, has said “They’re opening at possibly the hardest time there has ever been to open a small business, but their ingenuity, resiliency, design sense and social media presence is going to help give them the best possible platform to launch.” As a black & woman-owned business striving to contribute to the city's colorful culture, their “hope is that we’re playing a part in bringing people together.”

MORE FIRE PROTECTON

Have you heard that a state-of-the-art $22 million fire station is coming to the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport? By spring 2022, the current 8,000 square foot fire station will be replaced by an 18,300 square foot expansion, relocated on the west side of the airport by Coleman Avenue. With this region of San Jose densifying its core in the years to come, this fire station is “critical to keeping thousands of new residents and workers safe” according to Mayor Sam Liccardo.

Expect innovative fire equipment, infrastructure to support new technology, customized devices to keep aircraft crews and passengers safe, as well as faster response times and increased overall service capabilities.

MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Last month marked three big steps toward more affordable housing in San Jose. Project Homekey, which helps hotels and apartments convert their spaces into housing for homeless individuals, received a $14.5 million state grant toward purchasing a 76-unit property already being used as a shelter site.

In addition, Charities Housing Development Corporation of Santa Clara County (District 2) received a city loan from federal grants to provide 145 homes for low income seniors, with 49 being reserved for formerly homeless seniors. Another development located at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church (District 6) is receiving funds from the same source to create 106 units for formerly homeless and low-income residents. These units are defined as “permanent supportive housing, meaning there will be caseworkers and services provided to individuals who live there.”

Other notable developments include the revamp of 100 existing apartments across the city already in use, as well as upkeep on 151 units in District 7. The overarching goal is to maintain and reserve current low income housing and grow existing opportunities by purchasing housing units rather than building them to shorten turnaround times for use.
